8001 illustrates how a mountain hut-themed restaurant can be created without the standard cowshed atmosphere that you find in so many other places. This modern take on Swissness comes with black and white photos of a mountain tour and everyday life in an alpine hut on turquoise walls, as well as booths with sky-high backrests for privacy and and small tables with wooden chairs. The menu lists classics like fondue and Zürcher geschnetzeltes with rösti, not to mention more contemporary fare like so-called Swiss tapas including bacon-wrapped prunes and potato-bacon pralines. We ordered the Swiss alpine burger, which came with ham from the Grison Alps, mountain herbs and raclette cheese, a flavourful way to experience modern Swiss cuisine. In case you're wondering, 8001 is the postal code for Zurich's city centre.
